US Senator Brian Schatz releases statement regarding Trumpcare

President Trump took to the road last week to promote Trumpcare, and he loudly proclaimed, “It’s going to be great.”  In reality, Trumpcare is nothing but an enormous rip off.

Candidate Trump promised health insurance for everybody and no Medicaid cuts.  President Trump, however, is now trying to sell us on a bill which will destroy health insurance coverage for 24 million Americans, completely defund Planned Parenthood, and cut $880 billion from Medicaid.  To make matters worse, the Medicaid cuts find their way directly into the pockets of billionaires and health insurance executives who make more than $500,000 a year.

The loss of health insurance coverage will make us a sicker and less prosperous nation.  Pregnant women will lose access to prenatal care, and senior citizens will not be able to afford nursing home care.  Trumpcare also imposes an immoral age tax which will make health insurance more expensive with every birthday.

Trumpcare is one of the worst pieces of legislation I have ever seen, and it is a travesty to call it a health care bill.  I have listened closely, but I haven’t heard one Republican who can coherently defend this plan.

Our health care system is far from perfect, but Trumpcare is a gigantic step backwards.  All of us need to join together and defeat this irresponsible legislation.
