A pickup truck ended up fully submerged in the Maalaea Harbor on Monday. The incident happened at about 4 p.m.
Department of Land and Natural Resources officials say the operator of the pickup truck hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and the truck plunged into the water off the pier closest to the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation office.
The driver and operator were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Both were able to exit through the door windows after the impact of the vehicle hitting the water. No injuries were reported.
On Tuesday at about 11:20 a.m., the vehicle was pulled from the water by MCS Crane Company. There was no damage to the harbor facilities.
Coast Guard officials who were on scene say a small amount of fuel was released but was expected to dissipate quickly and caused no concern.
DLNR officers are continuing their investigation into how the vehicle jumped over the cement blocks and took out the harbor’s 10-minute loading sign.
The truck belongs to Beach Bum’s Restaurant, known to also cater food for the vessel Calypso.Follow @mauiwatch
