Updated at 10:40 a.m. to include an update to Hurricane Fernanda’s category status.

Hurricane Fernanda reached Category 4 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, Friday.

The National Hurricane Center reports that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening during the next day or so is forecast.

As of NHC’s 11 a.m. report, Fernanda was centered over the open waters of the eastern North Pacific Ocean about 1060 miles (1710 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.

NHC noted Friday that it is quite unusual to have a hurricane this strong so far south in the eastern North Pacific basin.
