Haiku man partially ejected, dies in Hali’imaile crash

On Monday, August 14, at approximately 6:56 p.m., a Motor Vehicle Accident occurred on Haliimaile Road near Hoomalie Place in Haiku. The accident occurred as a brown 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe multi-purpose vehicle was traveling south on Haliimaile Road when the operator lost control and the vehicle rolled over in the roadway.

The lone male operator was partially ejected where he sustained fatal injuries.

The operator of the vehicle has since been identified as 70-year-old Maake M. Via of Haiku.

Preliminary investigation reveals that Via was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2017 as compared to eleven this time last year
