Police Identify Victim, Suspect in Sunday QKC Stabbing

The identity of the male suspect in Sunday’s stabbing at the Queen Ka`ahumanu Center has been released.

Maui Police Department officials told MAUIWatch Tuesday morning that he has been identified as 23-year-old Kumulipo Iwa Sylva of Kahului.

Iwa has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree. His bail is set at $500,000.

In addition, Police have identified the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, as 35-year-old Eduardo Alejandro Cerezo of Makawao.

On Sunday at about 3:15 p.m., police were assigned to the Queen Ka`ahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului for a report of a male victim that had been stabbed.

Witnesses reported a male suspect fleeing the area.

Officers immediately made checks of the shopping center and surrounding streets.  A male fitting the description of the suspect was pointed out by bystanders at Kahului Community Park.  The male was taken into custody and transported to the Wailuku Police Station.

Authorities say the investigation is on-going.
