Good Eats: Kula Bistro

Kula Bistro 4566 Lower Kula Road, Open daily, closed for breakfast on Monday.
Like something straight out of Tuscany, Kula Bistro is perched along the idyllic slopes of Haleakala in upcountry Maui. Authentic, homestyle, Italian food is prepared lovingly in a charming eatery that reminds me of a visit to grandma’s house. Initially, upon entry you are enticed by the display of freshly baked sweets and treats, then ushered over to a table and instantly greeted. With a selection of Italian classics, pasta, pizza and pastries I prepare to pace myself.

The enticing pastry display case is full of Italian treats, homemade cakes and pies.

Decades of history, experience and expertise are apparent here as this husband and wife-run restaurant craft fine Italian food in a casual setting with impeccable ingredients. The dining room is BYOB, they offer no corkage fee and you can also order your meal to take home too. After opening their doors in 2012, it’s no surprise this bistro has received countless certificates of excellence, awards and notable reviews/recommendations.

Here’s a taste:

Calamari Steak Pupu was perfectly prepared, fork tender, delicately sautéed and served with a delightful lemon butter beurre blanc. Calamari can be challenging if overcooked and this was absolutely divine. $14.95
Signature Bistro House Special Pizza served with Kalua Pork, sweet yet tart pineapple and spinach. The flavors on this pizza and the crust were superb. it was a generous size and absolutely the highlight of the meal. $22.50 is a bit steep for me in price, but the quality and the flavor combination made it well worth it.
Pasta Special: Seafood Linguine Pomodoro Vodka sauce with fresh fish, jumbo scallops, shrimp linguine and all pastas are served with garlic bread. The perfect combination of sauce, pasta and protein ratio. Typically I ask for a side of parmesan cheese and this was so flavorful it didn’t even need it. This massive size was able to partially feed four and we had leftovers as well. $26 (lunch).
Save room for dessert! Their sweets are baked daily and include a wide variety of cakes, pies, cookies and more. This banana cream pie was wonderful, a bit on the small side but was enough for us to enjoy one or two small bites.
Layers of goodness, this pistachio cake was creamy, yet moist and had great consistency. Again the slice was a tad on the slender side, but then again it’s more about quality then quantity. Perfect balance of flavors and textures, meanwhile not too sweet.

The service was attentive and endearing, the food was delicious, well balanced and generous portions for the lunch/savory items. I can’t wait to dine here again and enjoy the majestic views along with the mouthwatering bites.
