At about noon on Thursday, Maui Fire Department firefighters were called to the area known as Olivine Pools on the northwest coast of Maui for reports of people unable to make their way back up a trail from the shoreline.
Firefighters from Napili and Lahaina responded.
On scene, witnesses stated that a couple was apparently swimming in one of the pools when a large wave nearly pulled them in to the ocean. A subsequent wave then washed the couple back on to the rugged shoreline.
Authorities say they were both able to make up it to dry land but unable to make their way back up the steep and slippery trail leading the Kahekili Highway. Firefighters were able to get to the victims and assisted them up the trail.
Both were in stable condition but suffered multiple cuts and scrapes. One victim, a 24-year-old female visitor was transported by Medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center in good condition. The second victim, a 36-year old-male visitor refused further medical attention.
