On Monday, February 11, 2019 at about 11 p.m. police officers responded to the Harbor Lights Apartments at 111 Kahului Beach Road. They met with a female who reported a male acquaintance had allegedly assaulted her while in her apartment and that he remained inside. Officers attempted to enter the apartment but the male refused to let them in and barricaded the door.
The male refused to come out and did not respond to police attempts to communicate with him.
The Department’s Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene.
On Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at about 7:45 a.m. the male came out from the apartment without incident after Police Negotiators were able to talk him down and to exit the apartment. He was arrested for Abuse of Family/Household Member and Kidnapping. The investigation is on-going.
The male has been identified as 49 year old Michael Soriano who has no local address.
There was never an active shooter situation however the neighboring University of Hawaii Maui Campus made their own decision to lock-down the campus as a precaution.
