A father and daughter along with another adult male spent the night in the mountains above Keanae on Monday night.
Maui Fire Department officials say the trio had set out about 12:30 p.m. on Monday to do some hiking and sightseeing. Their intended loop hike needed to be cut short as a landslide had prevented them from going further.
The hike back to their original starting point was too long and couldn’t be done before dark. They were able to hunker down and spend the night in the forest until they could make their way back with daylight the next day.
Family members had contacted authorities when they did not return on time and a search for them was conducted on Tuesday morning.
Shortly after fire fighters and Maui Police Department personnel started the search, the parties were able to walk out on their own and didn’t needed any assistance or medical attention.
“They did the right thing by staying put in the darkness and letting others know where they were going to be,” MFD officials said in a release.
