State Dept. of Public Safety needs $13 million to repair damage done at MCCC

To repair the damage done by the disturbance at Maui Community Correctional Center in March.

According to the State Department of Public Safety it needs $13 million over the next two years.

A Senate committee approved the request Friday despite some lawmakers questioning why the department has yet to build a new jail on the Valley Isle after receiving $13 million two years ago.

“I think we would’ve been much further along in building the new Maui jail if the prior County administration had been supportive, it was not supportive and so that delayed the advancement of the new Maui jail,” Representative Gregg Takayama, Public Safety Committee Chairman said.

The Department of Public Safety said Friday that they’re working on plans for a new facility with Maui County’s new administration.
