Investigation revealed the snorkel boat Mahana Nai’a had motor issues while en route back to Maalaea Harbor, following a snorkel trip carrying fifty two (52) passengers and three (3) crew members.
The Coast Guard responded to the Mahana Nai’a, approximately one (1) mile off shore and assisted by dewatering the vessel. The vessel was escorted back to Maalaea Harbor without incident.
No injuries were reported.
The Coast Guard responded to a distress call from the crew of the Mahana Nai’a catamaran which was approximately a mile off shore of the Kihei boat ramp and indicated that the vessel was taking on water. The call indicated about 3 feet of water was on the vessel with 55 people on board.
Maui Fire Rescue crews along with the Air-1 helicopter were also dispatched as a precaution but the Coast Guard was able to meet the vessel and assist them in returning to the Maalaea Harbor. No injuries were reported.

According to the company website, the Mahana Na’ia is 58ft long and 25ft wide. They have been doing Molokini snorkeling trips for over 25 years.
The cause of the incident is still being investigated.
