After more than 40 years, Molokai Drive Inn announced today via Facebook that they are closing its doors at its current location. The fast-food restaurant has been a fixture along Kamehameha V Highway since 1964. Earlier this year, the owner and operators of the eatery were embroiled in a rent dispute that reached Circuit Court.
According to the Maui News, The 159-page suit alleges that the landlord, which purchased the property in 1983 from landowner Molokai Ranch, promptly began charging the eatery rent that was significantly higher than the fair market rate. Molokai Drive Inn employs about 10 full-time employees and “six to seven” part-time employees.
