Lahaina Wastewater Overflowed Along Honoapi’ilani Hwy

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of approximately 5,000 gallons occurred on July 27, 2015 at the Lahaina Pump Station No. 2 along North Honoapiilani Hwy. The overflow was caused by a control wire failure at the pump station and flowed from 11:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Wastewater flowed from a sewer manhole along Honoapiilani Highway into a storm drain and discharged into the Kaanapali Golf Course Pond. The area was cleaned and disinfected, and warning signs were posted.

Bacteriological tests are being conducted to determine if the spill reached the ocean. The State Department of Health has been notified.
