At 5:00 AM hst the center of Hurricane Olaf was located about 890 miles SE of Hilo, Hawaii. Olaf is moving toward the west-northwest near 9 mph and this motion is expected to continue this morning. A turn toward the northwest later today will be followed by a turn toward the north-northwest on Thursday with a turn toward the north expected on Friday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph with higher gusts. Olaf is a category three hurricane on the saffir-simpson hurricane wind scale. Slow but steady weakening is expected over the next couple of days.
SURF: Large swells generated by Olaf will impact east facing shores of the main Hawaiian Islands over the next couple of days. Resultant hazardous surf will be large potentially life-threatening and damaging.
