The NWS issues Statewide Special Weather Alert with thunderstorms expected

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Statewide Special Weather Statement that includes the County of Maui (Maui, Molokai, and Lanai).

Although many areas are seeing sunshine this morning, localized heavy rain showers and some thunderstorm activity will develop later this afternoon for all islands. This will happen mainly for the mauka/interior portions of the islands. The heavy showers will likely expand to the shoreline areas by late afternoon. Localized flooding could occur at anytime in low lying areas and areas with poor drainage. Hikers should ALWAYS be cautious in or around stream and river areas as flooding could occur with little to no warning. Hikers are urged not to hike in the afternoon hours as the weather changes. In addition to the heavy rain fall, ground to cloud lighting strikes will also be a possibility.
