Kihei beaches reopened after no further sighting of shark

DLNR was informed that about 10 a.m. a beachgoer notified lifeguards that they saw a shark in waters off Kihei. County of Maui Lifeguards sent a jetski out to check and confirmed the sighting of an 8 – 10′ tiger shark approximately 30′ from shore at Charley Young Beach. The shark remained in the area for a while so lifeguards initiated a closure from Cove Park to Kamaole III.

DLNR DOCARE officers responded to assist in posting shark sighted signs and warning the public. Shortly after 12:30 pm the county reopened the beaches since there had been no further sightings.
