UPDATED: Reported shark attack closes Kamaole 1 Beach Park

A woman is being treated at the hospital for wounds she reports suffering when what she describes as a large shark biting her about 40 yards offshore from Kamaole Beach Park #1 on Maui at about 10:30 this morning.  This happened in front of the county lifeguard tower and lifeguards treated the woman before she was transported to the hospital.  The county has posted shark-sited signs from Cove Park to Kamaole Beach Park #3 and they also have a jet ski in the water.  A DOCARE officer has been dispatched to the hospital to interview the victim.


Ocean safety officials are responding to a reported shark attack at the Kamaole 1 Beach Park. The incident happened to a female victim right in front of the lifeguard tower. She was transported to the hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Officials are in the process of shutting down the beaches in the area of: Kam I, II, III, and the Cove. Ocean safety jet skis are also being deployed at this time to patrol waters in the area as well as State DLNR officers.
