Hiker Medevaced from West Maui Trail, Friday

At 2:33 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017, firefighters responded to the Ohai Loop Trail, near Nakalele Point on Kahekili Highway for a hiker experiencing a medical emergency.

Firefighters and paramedics from Napili arrived at the trailhead at around 3:00 p.m. and hiked down the trail on the makai side of Kahekili highway to reach the person. The hiker, a 29-year-old male from San Francisco, was found about 300 yards into the trail. The man was experiencing problems with a medical condition and was unable to walk out on his own.

Firefighters carried the man out to the highway in a stretcher basket and transferred him to an ambulance. EMS personnel then drove the man a short distance to a nearby landing zone, where the California visitor was loaded onto a helicopter medevac and flown to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

The San Francisco man had been hiking the Ohai Loop Trail with a family member when his medical condition prevented him from continuing.
