The National Hurricane Center has upgraded former Tropical Storm Fernanda to Category 1 hurricane status.
Hurricane Fernanda has continued to rapidly intensifying over the past several days, including an increase in maximum sustained winds to near 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher gusts.
NHC is forecasting additional rapid strengthening with the likelihood of Fernanda becoming a major hurricane by Friday.
Fernanda was centered over the open waters of the eastern North Pacific Ocean about 900 miles (1450 km) south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, as of NHC’s late morning, Hawai`i time, report.
