Arakawa Changes Course, Now Running for Kahului Council Seat

MAUIWatch has learned that Alan Arakawa sent an email to supporters Tuesday announcing his intentions to seek the Kahului seat on the Maui County Council. The seat will be vacated by Don Guzman who has already announced his intentions to run for Maui Mayor.

In May Maui Mayor Arakawa announced his candidacy for the statewide office of Lieutenant Governor.

The correspondence retrieved by MAUIWatch notes Arakawa as saying that after much deliberation “I have decided to run for Maui County Council (Kahului seat) instead of the Lt. Governor in the 2018 Election.”

Arakawa held the council seat from 1994 to the early 2000’s.

We reached out to County Communication Director Rod Antone who said that information regarding the Mayor’s 2018 election plans must come “directly from the Mayor.”

According to the Campaign Spending Commission Organizational Report, it lists Treasurer Anthony Arakaki and the Mayor’s wife Ann Arakawa as the Campaign Chairperson. Both were contacted for comment and have not yet returned calls.
