Kihei Vehicle Collision Leaves One Dead

On Saturday, July 14 at approximately 1:48 a.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Piilani Highway and Kulanihakoi Street in Kihei.

Maui Police Department officials say the collision occurred as a black 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling south on Piilani Highway, collided into a white 2006 Acura TSX 4-door sedan, failing to yield while making a left turn onto Piilani Highway from Kulanihakoi Street.

Both the operator and passenger of the Acura fled the scene on foot.

The operator of the Harley Davidson motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the Harley Davidson motorcycle has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as 29-year-old Michael Ben Wezalis of Kihei.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s 6th traffic fatality for 2018 as compared to 4 the same time last year.
