UPDATE: Hale Makana Barricade Suspect Surrenders

Maui Police Department officials say that at about 2:30 p.m. the department’s Special Response Team approached the residence in which the male subject was located.

The male subject, who’s name is being withheld pending further investigation, voluntarily surrendered to authorities.

There are no reports of injuries to the male subject or any of the officers.

A barricade incident is underway as Maui Police Department officers this morning acted in response to a wanted fugitive who was reportedly operating a stolen vehicle.

Wailuku Patrol Officers responded to the area of Hale Makana O Wai‘ale at about 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Checks in the area found the vehicle. Officers were also able to locate the fugitive in one of the units at the housing complex.

Police say the man, who has not been identified, has barricaded himself within the unit.

As of 1:40 p.m., MPD says it is unclear whether or not the individual is armed with any weapons.

An evacuation of neighboring units has taken place for safety precautions.

The situation remains “active,” according to police officials and officers remain on scene.
