At 5:53 p.m. on Monday, Maui firefighters responded to reports of a hiker in distress on the makai side of Kahekili Highway at Makamaka’ole Gulch.

Engine 1 (Wailuku) and Rescue 10 (Kahului) on Air 1 responded.

On scene, Engine 1 personnel hiked down a trail to assess the situation. Crews found a 44-year-old male who apparently made it down to a pool located below a sheer rock face.

The male made several attempts to climb back up the rock face, but was unable to do so. A friend who was with the victim decided to call 911 as they were losing daylight.

Engine 1 crew was able to verify that the area was clear enough for extraction of the victim by air. Rescue 10 on Air 1 arrived shortly after and used a “short-haul” system to air lift the victim to safety.

The 44-year-old Kihei resident was reported in good condition with no need for medical attention.
