Motorcycle Collision Leaves One Dead

On Friday, September 14 at approximately 12:14 p.m., a motor vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Haleakala Highway and Haleakala Crater Road.

The crash occurred as a yellow/black 2004 Suzuki 650cc Dual Sport motorcycle, traveling south on Haleakala Highway, crossed left of center and collided into a metal sign post located within the center grass island at the intersection of Haleakala Crater Road.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 56-year-old male from Haiku, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has since been identified, following the notification of next of kin, as David T. Garrett of Haiku.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s 13th traffic fatality for 2018 as compared to 7 the same time last year.
