Police Warn Against Phone Scam

The Maui Police Department is warning the public about a recent phone scam.

A resident in Lahaina reported receiving a phone call from an unknown male selling Google play cards. While the resident was on the phone they received another call from a female threatening to call the police if they didn’t comply.

MPD officials say the caller i.d. showed the number (808) 661-4441, which is the direct number to the Lahaina Police Station.

This number is spoofed, according to Police, as any outgoing calls from the Lahaina Police Station will not show up as (808) 661-4441. That number is reserved for outside callers trying to call in.

MPD urges the public not to answer any calls coming from that number.
