Authorities Investigating Kahului Attempted Kidnapping

The Maui Police Department is warning the public about an alleged attempted kidnapping that occurred near Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

According to authorities, the incident occurred between 3:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday.

An 11-year-old female student was reportedly walking home from Maui Waena Intermediate School when she was approached by a “local” male operating a tan colored four-door sedan on Ekolu Street.

Authorities say the male pulled his vehicle next to the girl near the intersection with Kaulu Place and opened the front passenger door. He then asked her if she needed a ride.

When she refused, he reached over and attempted to pull her into the vehicle. The girl resisted and was able to get away unharmed. Police say the man then made a u-turn on Ekolu Street and fled towards Onehee Avenue.

MPD reports that the man was described as possibly Pacific Islander with dark skin and a bumpy facial complexion, black and white colored hair (more white on the sides), brown eyes and a mustache. He looked about 50 to 60-years-old, appeared to be about 5-feet-6-inches to 5-feet-8-inches tall, and 160 to 180 pounds with a skinny build. He also had a tribal tattoo on the top of one of his hands. The male also had a vertical scar on his upper right cheek area.

The male was last seen wearing a black long sleeve shirt, black jeans, black rubber slippers and diamond stud earrings in both ears.

The vehicle was described as tan in color, possibly a 1990’s model Honda Civic that was lowered with a shattered rear windshield. The rear windows were tinted but the front windows were not tinted. The front passenger door was observed to have a dent in it. No license plate was given.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to please contact Detective Nagano at (808) 244-6438 or police at (808) 244-6400 or 9-1-1 in an emergency situation. Please refer to report #18-051089.

Police say the public should not follow or attempt to apprehend any suspects.
