Driver Leaves Scene of Deadly Pedestrian Crash in Makawao

At about 7 p.m. on Saturday, a motor vehicle collision occurred on Makani Road east of Mokuahi Street in Makawao. The collision occurred as a 71-year-old male pedestrian was walking on the makai shoulder of the roadway and was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound.

Authorities say the vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene prior to police arrival.

The male pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

The male pedestrian’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The vehicle involved was located by police shortly after as it was parked and left unattended fronting a residence in Pukalani. The operator was identified as a 66-year-old Pukalani man who was placed under arrest and later released pending further investigation.

The roadway was closed for about three hours as police conducted their investigation.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality for 2019 as compared to one at this time last year.
