UPDATE: Winter Storm to Close Several Maui Parks

All South Maui parks as well as Baldwin and Kanaha beach parks will be closed Sunday due to a severe winter storm impacting the entire state.

The following is an updated list of Maui County parks closed Sunday because of a severe winter storm impacting the state of Hawaii.

In South Maui, all beach parks are closed. In other regions:

Central Maui: Waihee and Kanaha beach parks.

East Maui: Baldwin and Hookipa beach parks.

West Maui: Papalaua Wayside Park and D.T. Fleming Beach Park.

Molokai: Papohaku Beach.

Heavy winds and large surf are expected to hit Maui County, particularly Molokai and the northern and southern coastlines of Maui. Countywide, residents and visitors are advised to stay indoors and postpone outside plans, including trips to the beach or park.

“It’s always better to be safe, than sorry,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “Weather forecasters expect coastal flooding along with powerful wind gusts that may down trees, power lines and even blow over vehicles. I strongly encourage everyone to stay at home and stay informed.”

County officials also may close West Maui parks, including Papalaua Wayside Park, and advise the public to reschedule hiking or camping trips across the island. Residents also should bring in any loose belongings from outside, such as potted plants or furniture that may blow away in the wind.

Maui Emergency Management Agency held a video teleconference Saturday with the National Weather Service and other counties for the latest forecasts of the severe weather this weekend. Officials from various county, state and federal departments and nongovernmental organizations were present, including Haleakala National Park, Maui Electric Co., state Department of Transportation and American Red Cross.

County officials will continue monitoring weather conditions through the weekend and respond to any emergencies.

The public can stay up to date with the latest information by signing up for Maui Emergency Management Agency’s alert program called Maka’ala. To register and learn more information about emergency preparedness, click here.
