Hikers Rescued from Iao Valley State Park

Maui Fire Department rescue personnel assisted stranded hikers on Sunday afternoon.

Responding to a 2:39 p.m. call, Wailuku firefighters arrived to find hikers at Iao Valley State Park. The group, visiting from the mainland, started out the hike but two could not return due to rising waters.

Firefighters were able to run a rope system and provide life jackets to assist two females across the river back to safety without using Air 1.

Firefighters left the scene at 3:22 p.m.

It was raining in the mountains at the time of the rescue.
