At 4:02 p.m. on Monday, Maui Fire Department firefighters were called to report of a female who had fallen down a cliff at Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu) in Hana.
A fire crew and an ambulance from Hana responded, along with the rescue company from Kahului who responded via the department’s Air 1 helicopter.
Upon their arrival, firefighters found the patient had slid about 30 feet down a high-angle slope, landing on rocks near the shoreline. She was conscious but with multiple injuries, including scrapes over much of her body, at least one broken bone and a shoulder injury.
Fire personnel and medics provided emergency medical treatment and packaged the patient so she could be air-lifted out. The patient litter was secured to a rescue rope and with a rescue technician attached was short-hauled by Air 1 to Hana Ball Field.
She was then transferred to the Maui Medevac helicopter for transport to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
MFD crews were clear from the scene by 5:29 p.m.
The patient is described as a 56-year-old female visitor.
