Man Arrested in 2016 Fatal Collision

A 23-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon by investigators with the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Section Vehicle Homicide Unit.

Charles Tyler Hardy of Kihei was arrested following a Grand Jury Indictment for the offenses of Accidents Involving Death and Negligent Homicide in the First Degree. His bail was set at $250,000.

MPD officials say the indictment came after an investigation into a fatal crash on November 27, 2016, along Piilani Highway at the intersection with Uwapo Road.

A 16-year-old pedestrian, identified as Hanna Simmons, was killed in the crash.

MPD Traffic Section Commander Lieutenant William Hankins says the arrest is a culmination of hundreds of man-hours spent by the Vehicle Homicide Unit reconstructing the crash.

“It is the goal of the Maui Police Department to conduct thorough investigations of these crashes and work with the Prosecutor’s office to hold those responsible for their actions,” department officials said on Thursday.

“We owe it to the victims and their family members to help bring closure to these avoidable crashes,” Lieutenant William Hankins. “Families of crash victims who are killed or seriously injured deserve justice.”
