MAYORWatch: What is the Status of the Habitat for Humanity Affordable Hana Housing Project?

Mayor Michael Victorino answers weekly questions submitted to his office staff.

Question: I’m a Hana resident and awaiting much needed affordable housing in Hana. What is the status of the Habitat for Humanity Affordable Hana Housing Project?

Answer: Mahalo for your question and I whole-heartedly agree that we need more affordable housing for the Hana community. That is why I transmitted a proposed budget amendment to the County Council on July 10, 2019.

The proposed amendment to the Fiscal Year 2020 Budget would add an appropriation of $5 million for Habitat for Humanity to move forward with the development of affordable housing.

The 100 percent Affordable Hana Housing Project includes land acquisition and new construction of 25 single family homes with an affordability period of 30 years. The project includes five units at or below 50 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI), seven units at or below 60 percent AMI and 13 units at or below 100 percent AMI. The proposed bill is currently sitting in the Economic Development and Budget Committee.
