Opihi Picker Found Safe at Maliko

The Maui Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a missing opihi picker early Thursday morning.

Crews arrived on scene at Maliko Bay shortly before 1 a.m., after the caller said her friend went to pick opihi in the area at about 4 p.m. and never returned. Crews made checks in the area until about 3:15 a.m. and suspended the search until first light due to darkness and large surf along the shoreline.

Upon resumption of the search, the missing party was spotted on the far east end of Maliko Bay.

According to authorities, the man was stranded as large surf pounded the shoreline so he stayed put overnight in a safe location. Rescue crews escorted him up the trail to safety.

The man did not suffer injuries.
