On Wednesday, April 1, at approximately 9:41 a.m., a single motor vehicle collision occurred on Honoapiilani Highway (30), North of Plantation Estates Drive.
Preliminary investigation reveals a 2006 Volkswagen 4dsd bearing Hawaii license plates MNW-795 was traveling North on Honoapiilani Highway at high rate of speed. The operator lost control of the vehicle as it rounded a curve in the road. The VW sedan continued Northbound uncontrollably until it struck an embankment on the Makai side of the roadway. The VW Sedan then continued uncontrollably up and over the embankment, and eventually over the cliffside. The VW landed approximately forty feet down the bottom of the cliff on the rocky shoreline.
The VW operator, identified as Henry CACATZUN VASQUEZ (21) Twenty-one years old male from Lahaina died at the scene.
The operator of the VW was not utilizing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. The vehicle airbags were deployed as a result of this crash.
Based on physical evidence detected at the scene, Speed is a factor in this crash.
The involvement of drugs and alcohol has not been determined and is pending.
Maui County currently has 3 fatalities this year, as compared to 7 at the same time last year.
