Motorcyclist in Critical Condition After Kahului Traffic Signal Pole Crash

On Thursday, July 2, 2020, at approximately 12:25 AM, a motor vehicle collision occurred on East Kamehameha Avenue at the intersection of Pu’unene Avenue in Kahului.  Investigation reveals a 1998 Yamaha V Star motorcycle traveling southwest on Kamehameha Avenue collided into the concrete curbing of the traffic island, and subsequently collided into the traffic signal pole.

As a result of the crash, the motorcycle operator, a forty-three (43) year old male with no local address, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The operator of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet at the time of this crash.

A preliminary investigation reveals that speed is suspected as a factor in this crash.

The involvement of drugs and alcohol has not been determined; however, the investigation is ongoing and final determination has yet to be made by traffic crash investigators.

To date, Maui County has 5 fatalities this year, as compared to 11 at the same time last year.
