On Sunday, October 4, 2020 at approximately 08:22 P.M., a near-fatal motor vehicle collision occurred on South Kihei Road, approximately 0.1 miles south of Alanui Ke Alii in Kihei, Hawaii.
Preliminary investigation thus far reveals, a black YN moped with a single male (45 year old/ Kihei resident) operator was traveling southbound on South Kihei Road when it collided into the rear of a silver Hyundai Accent sedan. The Hyundai sedan was parked legally in a marked stall on the makai shoulder of South Kihei Road. At the time of the collision, the vehicle was occupied by a lone female occupant (50 year old/ Kihei resident) The female within the vehicle was not injured as a result of this collision.
Investigation further reveals the moped operator was ejected from the moped after colliding with the Hyundai sedan. As a result of this collision the moped operator sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Preliminary investigation reveals Alcohol was a factor in this crash.
The involvement of drugs and speed has not been determined and is pending.
To date, Maui County has 6 fatalities this year, as compared to 16 at the same time last year.
